About DEQX

Pioneering precision audio technology for over two decades. We bring the accuracy of the recording studio to your listening room.

Our Story

DEQX represents the culmination of over 50 years of audio innovation. Founded by Kim Ryrie, co-founder of Fairlight Instruments (creators of the legendary CMI sampler that defined 1980s music), DEQX brings decades of digital audio expertise to the challenge of perfect sound reproduction.

The journey began in the 1970s with Fairlight's groundbreaking Computer Musical Instrument, used by artists from Peter Gabriel to Stevie Wonder. This evolved into professional post-production systems that earned Academy Technical Awards and became industry standards in Hollywood and broadcast facilities worldwide.

In the late 1990s, working with Lake DSP's advanced FIR filtering technology, we turned our attention to the final frontier: loudspeaker reproduction. We discovered that even the finest speakers suffer from timing errors that blur soundstages and obscure musical details. DEQX was born to solve this fundamental problem.

Today, our Gen 4 products represent "4G-Audio" - a quantum leap beyond previous generations. With an order of magnitude more processing power and nearly 12dB improvement in analog transparency, DEQX systems deliver what legendary JBL designer Greg Timbers called "from another planet."

Our Heritage

From Fairlight to DEQX: 50+ Years of Innovation

Our heritage traces back to 1971, when Hi-Fi wasn't even teenage, and Ryrie cofounded Electronics Today International (ETI) magazine. It used B&K equipment to measure and review the latest Hi-Fi offerings.

In 1975, frustrated with analog synthesisers, Ryrie co-founded Fairlight Instruments, which revolutionised music production with the world's first sampling synthesiser and real-time music sequencer. The Fairlight CMI became ubiquitous in 1980s music, used by names like Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, and Hans Zimmer.

This legacy of digital audio innovation continued through professional post-production systems and eventually led to DEQX's founding in the late 1990s.

The Evolution to Gen 4

  • 2

    2nd Generation

Active speakers with steeper filters and EQ - better but still phase-limited

  • 3

    3rd Generation

    DSP-based with driver time-alignment - significant improvement

  • 4

    4th Generation

DEQX Gen 4: True linear-phase FIR filtering with comprehensive speaker, crossover, and room correction - "4G-Audio"
